Speyer Cathedral
UNESCO World Heritage SiteUNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Speyer Cathedral belongs to the diocese of Speyer. A Romanesque basilica founded by Emperor Conrad II in 1030. It was consecrated in 1061. It is one of the largest and most impressive romanesque edifi ces in Germany. The crypt deserves special attention since it is preserved in its almost unaltered original condition. The Cathedral contains the tombs of eight German emperors and kings and several bishops. In 1981 the church building was added to the UNESCO list of “World Cultural Heritage Sites”.
The Main City Gate
(Altpörtel)One of the tallest and most important city gates in Germany. Its lower sections were constructed between 1230 and 1250. The top floor of the tower with its late-Gothic balustrade and arcades were built from 1512 to 1514. Fine view from the top storey and an exhibition about the city fortification.
SEA LIFE Speyer

The Memorial Church
(Gedächtniskirche)Neogothic design, built from 1893 to 1904 to commemorate the protestation of 1529 at the “Reichstag” (Diet of Speyer). The word “protestant” was first used here. The stained glass church windows and the organ are especially noteworthy
The Gothic Chapel
(Gotische Kapelle)Was built in 1516 and is situated in the Adenauerpark.
The Technical Museum of Speyer
(Technik Museum Speyer)The Technical Museum of Speyer (Technik Museum Speyer) is situated between the Cathedral of Speyer and the airfield. The historic and therefore protected “Liller Hall” exhibits objects pertaining to the fields of aviation, rail-travel, fi refi ghting and shipbuilding. Also worth a visit: the IMAX-Dome-filmtheatre and the space shuttle Buran.
The Historical Museum of the Palatinate
(Historisches Museum der Pfalz)The museum was built from 1907 to 1910. Collections and artefacts from the Stone Age to the present can be seen, also the Cathedral Treasure, the Wine Museum and changing exhibitions.
Jewish Courtyard (Judenhof)
UNESCO World Heritage SiteEstablished before 1128, it is the eldest mikveh (bath complex for ritual cleansing) of its kind in Germany. It is around 33 ft deep. The eastern walls of the adjacent men’s and women’s synagogue are also in good condition. The original architectural decoration of the synagoge and ritual bath are on display in the museum SchPIRA. In 2021, the Jewish Courtyard was added to the UNESCO list of “World Cultural Heritage Sites“
The Old Mint
(Alte Münze)The “Neues Kaufhaus am Markt” (New Department Store at the Market) was established in 1748 and replaced the medieval “House of Coiners”. Until the 19th century it served as an exchange of all trade and business activities on the Rhine. Later it served administrative purposes.
The Town Hall
(Rathaus)The Town Hall is a building representative of late baroque architecture. It was built between 1712 and 1726.
St James pilgrim statue
(Jakobspilger)The Jacobspilger statue stands on St. James Way in Speyer in front of the cathedral. The statue represents a pilgrim traveling on the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. It was donated by the 95th bishop of Speyer: Bischop Anton Schlembach for the 2000-years-anniversery of the city of Speyer in 1990
